Women are not sex object

Women are now sex objects!

There is a dangerous trend and precedence being set by the
Nigerian music industry. Women are now boldly portrayed as sex
objects, weak and subservient to men. You only need to watch
one or two music videos, particularly from the RnB, Hip Hop, and
fuji genres in the industry to see this destructive tendency. The
effect of this is that young men are now being raised in our society
not to value women but to only see them as sex objects that
should answer to their whims and desires at the snap of a finger.

It is therefore not surprising that most young men today don’t
know how to treat and value a woman. Right from childhood, they
have been wrongly indoctrinated through exposure to these
music videos aired on most Nigerian television stations. They
hardly see any music video that portrays women as a valuable and
honourable creation of God. Womanhood is trivialized and
women are made to look as if all they are good for is to wear
skimpy dresses and shake their booty in videos. The image of
several ladies dancing around one male artiste suggests to young
men that they can have any number of females they want. This
eradicates any sense of faithfulness and responsibility.

The lyrics of songs being turned out by these genres of music in
the industry are very derogatory to women. Women’s chastity is
condemned while promiscuity is promoted. The body of woman
is talked about as if she is just a thing and not a person. Women
are called all sorts of senseless names such as ashawo, crazy, drug,
Ferrari, to mention a few. It is almost as if the artistes have lost the
idea of any good lyric, so they mostly sing about women, with
some even discussing their sexual escapades without any shame.
Some lyrics and videos are so completely useless that you wonder
why anyone would call it a song.

The songs are mostly sensual, with money being displayed as an
instrument for conquering women. These ideas go into the sub-

conscious mind of the young male child and eventually manifest
when he begins to relate with women. The young woman too is
told she is worth nothing other than satisfying the sexual lust of
men. It is almost as if there is a written code that videos must
feature nude women for it to sell. These videos are destroying
womanhood, consequently destroying the society. They have
taken root in the fabric of our society to the point where nothing
seems to be wrong with them anymore.

Women are portrayed virtually nude in bikinis while their male
counter parts are ‘properly’ clad. The message is that the body of
the woman is only good for pornography and entertainment.
Unfortunately, lots of our young ladies are more than happy to
play this role. Some even seek to be featured in these unworthy
videos. This is why it is difficult to win this battle because women
themselves are both perpetrators and victims. Women perform
acts in these videos that are too graphic to describe here. The
battle would have been half won if women themselves would not
play the lewd scenes in these videos.

The young male artists in some videos sit down while some ladies
do lap dance for them, thus depicting themselves as masters while
the ladies are simply servants who are there to meet their
insatiable desires. It should not come as a surprise that some men
today treat their women like slaves. Music is powerful, and the
consequence of this foolishness is far reaching. There seems to be
no caution or limit on the extent to which women are debased in
the videos. There are bathroom scenes where the ladies are
literally worshipping the man. The woman’s backside and her
breasts have become a target for video producers. Close shots of
women buttocks and breasts are now very common in videos
being churned out on a daily basis.

Whereas the women in these videos are presented as ‘only good
for dancing’, their male counterparts are portrayed as successful.
In some of the videos, the ladies are carrying the luggage of the
man and waiting on him. Unknown to the general public, subtly
but surely, women are being taught that they cannot achieve
anything meaningful in life through such depiction. In the years to
come, the impact of these mind games will be disruptive on
correct and proper family values.

The most unfortunate thing is that female artists in the
aforementioned genres are even worse. They take this foolishness
to a higher level, expressing themselves as sexual objects. Their
videos are even more degrading to women than those of the male
artists. We need to ask ourselves some questions. Why is it that
male artists are mostly the performer in the music videos while
the females are spectators, cheering them on and wishing they
could have a taste of the action? Is it any surprising to see more
young girls becoming spectators in life rather than actively
pursuing their dreams and goals?

Meaningful and well meaning women in the society should rise up
to condemn such videos and put pressure on the National
Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to tighten their censorship. It
appears that women themselves enjoy the videos, making it
difficult to ban. This is why well meaning women and women
NGOs in the country must educate young ladies on the need to
stand up against any musical video that portrays the woman in a
bad light.

The way women’s breasts and backside are displayed in musical
videos should be repulsive to any responsible woman. How do we
expect our young men to treat our daughters right when they
grow up with exposure to such videos? It is time to address this
issue and put these perverted artists exactly where they belong.
The female dancers who are desperate to feature in these videos
are doing a great disservice to the female folks. In some videos,
one sees a lady taking a shower or nude in the bath. One wonders

what sort of interpretation such scenes bring to the videos.

The societies that have allowed this evil to take root in their
consciousness are now struggling with high divorce rate. Their
young men have also lost good manner of respecting women or
the value of marriage and good happy homes. We are on the same
path except something is urgently done about this urgent
situation. I know those societies have other contributing factors to
their high divorce rate, derogatory musical video is certainly top
on the list.
It’s important to commend few responsible artists who are
addressing the ills in the society, contributing to the development
of the country and promoting the culture of respect for women.
One would deliberately refrain from mentioning names, but there
are certainly few who are upholding good standard and portray
women in good light. It is hoped that they will continue on this
good path.

Any society that does not value her women is dead. We would all
not be here if not for women. They spend sleepless nights to make
sure one child becomes something in life. They endure all sorts of
pain and discomfort to bring us into this world. Women have
contributed to making the world a better place. Women must be
treasured, valued, respected and honoured. Men, likewise, must
be respected and honoured, but the focus of this discuss is
women. We need good drama and musical videos that will
correctly portray women and the ideals and value of a family. We
must get rid of the perverted view of women we see in musical
videos in this country. The time to do it is now!
