I THOUGHT HE WAS AN ANGEL UNTIL... by Godwin Captain Kalu
It was a silent night. The simplicity of nature was glaring. The stars
were already up and bright, smiling on the earth.
This touch of breeze could gently nudge a lazy soul to sleep. The
lights were partially dazzling and brilliant with a dull concentration
of lovely rays alternating around several spots. The colours were
well dispersed and cool enough to suggest love in the air.
The tables were well decorated just for two. Indeed, it was another
Valentine's day. Le' May's garden was just the place to be. Couples
and love birds were already seen in couches sharing some
memorable fun time together.
Now, Fred was a good looking, responsible-looking young man. I
had not known him deeply though. We barely met 3 weeks ago at
a wedding reception of a mutual friend. He had an average height,
a nice body shape, an attractive eye contact and was cutely
dressed in a stunningly mesmerizing blue coloured blazers to
complement his pale complexion. He only smiled at me once but I
was in a hurry to catch up with another appointment so I hurried
off.
How he got my phone number is still a question yet to be
answered.
This was not the first time he'd be asking me out. I had turned
down his invitation for a date on several occasions until this day.
Before now, I mistook him him for a staff in a telecommunicati
ons company and probably at a section where he was accessible
to free airtime. His conversations on the phone were always
timely, early and long. I would wake up at most times to see
misssed calls from him. His text messages were like the last words
that would get my phone beeping before bedtime. How he
marked his time, I can't just explain. I only started getting used to
him along the line and would wake up to expect his call. He had an
irresistible charisma and ambience over the phone. He had his
way with words. Any lady could believe him cheaply.
I knew what he was up to all along but I didn't want to give in too
soon. Moreover, we just met and I was trying to be careful. I had
experienced multiple relationship hurts in the past for me not to
know that intentions could be so unpredictable.
All I wanted was to be careful this time around. He made no
mention of wanting a relationship so, I was careful not to
misbehave and be left on the island when it probably backfired.
In a moment, we were seated and each of us placed an order. I
went for roasted chicken with malta Guiness to go with.
He just started laughing and asked why I didn't order for small
stout. I thought he was joking but his voice sounded too serious to
be a joke. He didn't wait for an answer as he quickly ordered for
pepper soup with 2 bottles of Gulder to push it down.
The whole scene was like a dream but it wasn't.
"I don't belong here" I said in my spirit but still, I pushed it aside
to flow along.
In a little while, the atmosphere was ripe for interaction. Right
then, romantic words were flying out of his mouth. They were
sweet to the ears but at the same time, I wasn't comfortable
receiving them any more. Already, his intentions were not yet
clear and also, I was trying to cope the reality that Fred had just
ordered for 2 bottles of Gulder in my presence.
Just then, he read into my mind and in few words he said:
" Lynn, you are simply adorable. You are beautiful beyond words.
The prettiest of all creation. The desire of any sensible man. I just
love you, I don't really know why. Let us just flow along together.
You understand what I mean!."
Again, this got me more confused. His intentions were still vague.
His attention was more on my body than on my person.
Moreover, I had never considered dating a man who could
patronize strong drinks. He could get wild at any time and disgrace
me publicly under the unction of beer.
"We can try out a relationship together. I'm so sure it will work
out." He added.
"na so e dey start?" I said within my spirit but then I just decided
to play along as though nothing happened.
"Hmmmmm"...... I said, but can I trust you? I stammered.
Hastily, he responded, "Why not. Let's just begin and I'll show you
what love is all about".
He pushed the drink towards me but I returned it with a smile. At
several times, he moved his hand closer towards me to touch me
but I pulled it off smiling.
(but he sounds more responsible than this on phone. I said to my
mind)
He said he was ready to die for me, do anything to make me feel
special and love me till others got jealous. He vowed that I was his
heaven and earth. His tomato and strawberry. I loved those lines.
Fred could be so poetic.
Guess what! Words were still in his mouth when a strange lady
walked up to the table...... (to be continued)
